Outdoor Portrait Tutorial reveals all you need to know about balancing ambient light and studio strobes on location. I know a lot of people find this difficult the first time you watch this Portrait Lighting tutorial.

But the best part is you can rewind the video and watch it again... Here are the basics... Meter the background first before you do anything else.

If you don't have a light meter then use your in camera meter to get a good and accurate exposure for the background. Adjust the image until you like the look of the exposure on the sky.

From there bring in some fill flash and adjust for a proper exposure on your models face. Hands down this technique will improve the look of your outdoor portraits and it is a lot easier than shooting in natural light only.

You will probably have to practice this portrait lighting technique a few times before you get the hang of it, but it is pretty simple once you get the basics down. I also like to use a neutral density filter as well.

In this Outdoor Portrait Tutorial, I demonstrate how to balance ambient light and fill Flash on an Outdoor Portrait shoot.

I am also using a 3 stop B+W Neutral Density filter to allow me to shoot at a wider aperture. I am using the Nikon D810 with the Nikon 85mm 1.4
